Just as it has recently done with Sixth Avenue South, The City of North Myrtle Beach is planning major new intersection improvements at 11th avenue north and highway 17. Among those improvements will be turn lanes in both north and south directions on both sides of the street, and new and better functioning traffic signals.
Our city is becoming more friendly to bicycle riders. City Councilman Bob Cavanaugh says “go take a look at Hill Street in Cherry Grove from Sea Mountain Highway to Little River Neck Road. We just put in a new bike path there and it is very safe.”
Look for lots of pedestrian traffic, special events, and street closures along Main Street over the next ten days. It is the annual “Spring Safari” for the S O S, the Society of Stranders, which has been holding special gatherings in the Ocean Drive Section since 1980. Among the special activities will be Fun Sunday and Fun Monday during this coming weekend. Then, on Saturday, April 28th, the annual SOS spring parade will roll down Main Street and continue for a ways on Ocean Boulevard. Organizers say the number of people attending this spring event could range from 10,000 to 20,000.
City officials are reminding visitors to the area that some things have changed, including our new “no smoking” ordinance. It means you cannot smoke inside restaurants, bars, and stores. Smoking is prohibited indoors in any place that is open to the public with some rare exceptions such as a “cigar” bar. There is no regulation on smoking outdoors, except that smokers should stay away from doors and entrances to buildings where the smoke could drift inside the building.
